Professor Michaelson will be speaking on two subjects: Psychedelics in Monotheistic Traditions, and MOSAIC: New Research into Religious Psychedelic Use
First, in March 2025, Harvard Law School hosted a first-of-its kind symposium on the possibilities for legal recognition of the use of psychedelics by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Unlike psychedelic churches, these religions are already recognized by the Supreme Court, and there are significant numbers of people who embrace psychedelic use as part of their religious lives. But what are the religious and theological bases for psychedelic practice in these traditions? How do these practices fit within First Amendment doctrines and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act? What are the challenges such a claim might face in the conservative-dominated Supreme Court? And what about issues of safety, justice, and harm reduction?
Second, the Emory Center for Psychedelics and Spirituality is a leader in investigating the implications of psychedelics for religious and spiritual life and engaging with a variety of religious communities. Launched in 2024, the MOSAIC initiative project is an interdisciplinary initiative studying the variety and implications of psychedelic experiences among people from diverse religious backgrounds. It includes qualitative studies, quantitative studies, mixed-methods work, and work in the psychedelic humanities.
