As “it gets better” for (some) LGBT people here in the United States, it is getting worse elsewhere in the world.  Beyond the well-publicized outrages in Russia and Uganda, conservatives, nationalists, and religious fundamentalists are creating a backlash against LGBT equality, which they depict as a Western plot.  They are aided both by the American Christian Right’s export of homophobia, and by unwitting Western activists who sometimes play into its hands.  This conversation will provide a landscape of the global struggle for gender and sexual equality, insight into the post-colonial and neo-liberal forces at play, and practical steps to get involved and stay informed.
