There may or may not have been psychotropic substances in the ancient Israelite past, but altered states of consciousness are central to it. And Yom Kippur is a a primary example. It is an invitation to the oldest of mind-altering practices: v’initem et nafshotechem, impoverishing, diminishing, starving the nefesh, the embodied soul, by means of fasting and temporary asceticism. And in so doing, cultivating an altered mind and heart to receive renewal, expiation, and revelation. Together we’ll explore the nature of this primal ritual, using text, imagination, and perhaps some first-person testimony.
Join Rabbi Michaelson for this Yom Kippur afternoon exploration at Bnai Keshet in Montclair.
