Identity, Advocacy, and Culture Change: Building an inclusive Jewish community in an era of rapidly evolving values

As the pace of change throughout society accelerates, the American Jewish community has struggled to reconcile new ideas with tradition and entrenched stereotypes.

Jewish communal institutions are rethinking themselves and innovators are calling for new priorities — but how do our communities navigate the balance between convention and controversy?

Jay Michaelson has been at the center of these debates for the past decade. As author, social entrepreneur, and activist, Jay has helped shape the debate on what inclusion means in a 21st century Jewish community, especially in terms of LGBT people, Israel, and religious pluralism. He has been praised and attacked — from both the right and the left — about all three of these issues.

Join us for a conversation with Jay about the power dynamics in Jewish communal organizations that can be harnessed to create or impede change. We”ll hear about where moral imperatives and political realities collide, how the views of small minorities can either drive progress or prevent us from acting effectively (or both), and what Jewish pluralism looks like in the 21st century.
